Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada became Norfolk's sixth sister city in April 2006 and its first in the Western Hemisphere.
Halifax is a major Atlantic port with a rich maritime history and served as a gateway to countless immigrants
to the New World. Like Norfolk, the Halifax Regional Municipality has a regional
economic development partnership, a vibrant tourist and cruise industry, hospitals, universities, libraries,
museums, theaters, a fine symphony, and numerous multicultural festivals. Halifax is home to the Black
Cultural center for Nova Scotia, which douments abundant ancestral connections to Norfolk and Virginia.
Norfolk Sister City Association oversees multiple programs with counterparts in Halifax, including
- Coordinating the visit of His Worship, Mayor Peter Kelly of Halifax to Norfolk for official "Twinning"
ceremonies in April 2006
- Coordinating Norfolk cultural and economic development program briefings for Halifax
